GECOM completes recount of ballots in Districts 4,5; to make formal declaration

Kaieteur News – The recount of ballots for Region 4 District 4 (East Coast Demerara) and Region 5 (Demerara-Mahaica) has officially concluded at the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) headquarters.

The recount, which began on Thursday at 08:00hrs and ended on Friday around 20:30hrs, covered 391 ballot boxes from Region Four and 77 boxes from Region Five.

Following the process, candidates and supporters of the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) declared victory, asserting that the recount confirmed their lead in the 2025 General and Regional Elections.

The recounts were initiated after formal requests from A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) and the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) parties, which claimed discrepancies in the recent elections. However, GECOM only approved a recount for Sub-District 4 of Region Four, as APNU’s requests for Regions Seven and Ten were deemed invalid. WIN’s attempt to request recounts, including for Region Eight, were denied on the grounds that the party’s representative submitting the request was not properly accredited. A subsequent request from WIN for a Region Four recount was also rejected, as confirmed in official GECOM correspondence.

Following the conclusion of the recount, GECOM’s premises were filled with jubilant PPP/C supporters and candidates chanting slogans like “One more year pon dem,” signalling their confidence in the results. Supporters continued celebrating into the night, proclaiming victory in both the General and Regional Elections.

Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Anil Nandlall, S.C., confirmed the recount had ended and noted that the tabulation process had begun. Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand also addressed the media, stating, “There is no material change in this recount. Irfaan Ali is going to be the country’s president, and the PPP/C is going to be a majority in parliament by far.”

In a surprising appearance, President Irfaan Ali visited the GECOM headquarters during the recount, receiving loud cheers from his supporters. Speaking to reporters, President Ali said he found no irregularities in the recount process and thanked GECOM’s staff and PPP/C agents for their hard work. “I came here to thank them for the enormous work that our agents and GECOM staff are doing, the PPP/C family, our supporters, they have done a tremendous job; they have worked hard and with hard work comes victory,” he stated. Ali also criticised APNU for demanding recounts without substantiating their claims. “These people are playing games, they want a recount, and when they get it, it still doesn’t give them what they want,” he remarked.

Throughout the day, the streets near GECOM headquarters, particularly High and Cowan Streets, saw supporters from all three parties, PPP/C, WIN, and APNU. However, following the announcement of the recount’s conclusion, only PPP/C supporters remained visible in the area, with WIN and APNU supporters noticeably absent.

Meanwhile, upon completion of the count, Chairperson of GECOM Justice (ret’d) Claudette Singh requested a 23:00hrs meeting with commissioners.

However, the Opposition-nominated commissioners were a no-show prompting the chairperson to reschedule the meeting for Saturday at 23:00hrs.

Following the completion of the tabulation of votes, the chairperson calls a meeting of the commission in which the Chief Elections Officer (CEO) provides a report which is considered by the commission.

Once approved, the commission thereafter can declare the official results of the General and Regional Elections held on September 1, 2025.
