Dear Editor,
Every country with nuclear technology is a threat to peace and stability of this planet.
It is only a matter of time before those with nuclear technology turn to producing nuclear armaments. And, those countries already with nuclear armaments increase their stockpiles of nuclear weapons for their concept of MAD (Mutually Assured Destruction).
There need to be a call for nuclear disarmament which many countries with the technology will resist as they have come to rely on nuclear weapons as a deterrent.
There is so much potential that we humans have: potential for good and for evil. We need to rid ourselves of practicing evil and turn to doing good. Nuclear technology is a tool: for good or for evil.
No one seems to care that we are blundering ourselves into a worldwide war that will make the previous so-called world wars seems like skirmishes.
Once we rid ourselves of nuclear technology, we can explore ways in which we can reduce conventional weapons. In the short to medium term, conventional weapons are here to stay until we can find ways to resolve our disputes peacefully.
What has this got to do with Guyanese?
On the one hand we have Venezuela building up its armed forces. So, we also need a temporary conventional deterrent. We do not need an American base in Guyana as that would be a permanency. We need to demonstrate to the Venezuelans that we can defend our territory. As things stand the Venezuelans are being conceited because they believe their numerical supremacy gives them moral supremacy. Way of the world, might is right (according to some).
So, what do we do once we build a conventional weapons deterrent?
We disarm!
Sounds crazy as in why build up our armed forces to disarm. We already have an armed force which needs augmenting. Disarming now would be a meaningless gesture to the Venezuelans at least. It is about sending a powerful message to the whole world. That is, WE CAN PULL BACK FROM THE BRINK.
Sincerely,
Sean Ori
