Lack of safety standards enforcement

(Kaieteur News) – As a public communications analyst, I am increasingly confronted with conversations about the lack of safety regulations, enforcement, and modern standards across various sectors of Guyana
From fires claiming the lives of children to passengers losing their lives through drowning, too many tragedies raise questions about whether adequate safety systems and standards are truly in place and whether those systems are being properly maintained and regularly upgraded.
Too many people have become accustomed to lacklustre standards and reactive responses. Yet, many of these situations can be addressed with greater urgency, seriousness, and accountability.
I am not seeking to blame any particular individual or institution. However, as a people, we must understand that safety systems cannot remain unchanged for decades. They require constant review, maintenance, upgrading, and enforcement as society evolves and new risks emerge.
Flood drainage, fire prevention, road safety enforcement, building and construction standards, forestry management, public transportation, and many other areas require strong regulations and consistent enforcement to protect lives.
Citizens are gradually losing trust and confidence in systems that have remained in place for decades without sufficient change or improvement. Safety cannot be treated as an afterthought. It must be a continuous national priority.
The loss of life is often irreversible. Therefore, we must ask ourselves whether we are doing enough to prevent avoidable tragedies before they occur, rather than waiting until lives are lost to demand answers
