Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo.
Kaieteur News – As Guyanese anxiously await the results of Monday’s General and Regional Elections, General Secretary of the PPP/C Bharrat Jagdeo reminded citizens that the party with the most votes will win the presidency.
His comments come even as citizens are predicting a minority government – with the fledgling We Invest In Nationhood (WIN) party showing strong early performance from statements of poll released thus far. Jagdeo at the time was speaking with a selected group of journalists at Freedom House. Kaieteur News was not invited.
He was asked by the media to address the statement made by Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) in relation to a Statement of Poll (SOP) that was posted on the Team Mohamed’s Facebook page, that the organisation said was fake, and what he made of it at such a juncture. The VP urged the other parties to desist from posting ‘fake’ documents as in a few days’ time, the country will be made aware of the results by GECOM. While posting of the SOP’s may give parties a short-term advantage, he cautioned that they should not by any means upload fake ones.
“…in this country, our voting system is proportional representation, and the party that gets the most votes, wins the presidency, and the party and depending on the votes that you get in relation to the number of voters who turn out, the seats in parliament are allocated,” he explained.
Jagdeo went on to say that the system is simple and at the end of the day, every single vote will be added up countrywide, for each party and then the results will be made public. He was also asked to speak on how the process went. The VP said that he is reluctant to comment this early, as the process is ongoing. “Right now, as we’re speaking, there is a counting process, and that has not been completed as yet. Thereafter, GECOM, as for the new law, would have to upload the SOPs and then formally start the process of tabulation and the declaration of results,” he said.
Jagdeo added, “Nevertheless, I thought that I should give you the comments, since you requested it. From the party’s perspective, we had a good day, and I think the country had a good day. The formal process of voting went smoothly.”
He disclosed that there were some glitches along the way, which were highlighted to GECOM by the different political parties and in his opinion, he thinks that the commission sought to accommodate the concerns raised.
The politician assured the media that there was nothing fatal about the process and everything went by peacefully, as every citizen who wanted to exercise their franchise, had the opportunity to do so in a peaceful manner. “You saw many of the polling places didn’t have any crowds. As we got closer to the evening, people could have gone there and freely voted, in spite of the concerns at the beginning that the voting was very slow. The process, the vote, was a very slow one,” he added.
Nevertheless, the VP expressed that he is pleased that the day went the way it did and now all that there’s left to do is await the declaration of results and hopefully, the country will continue to remain in this peaceful state.”
Jagdeo blames APNU
Jagdeo was asked what was his take on persons staying away from the ballot. Using the opportunity to shift blames onto the Opposition, he said that there are many persons who may not want to support the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPPC) openly, but they will not risk a change in government because there is no better alternative to the PPP/C.
On the other hand, “others may just, you know, have opted out of the process because APNU did not do enough work in my view in the city and so those could be just two considerations.”
Grappling at some bits of confidence, the VP declared that, “APNU will have a very difficult night…APNU’s traditional supporters are going three ways: to the PPP, to WIN, and some will remain with APNU. That party will have some serious introspection to do, (as) they made a serious miscalculation.” In a last-ditch effort of encouragement to his supporters, he urged the citizens of Guyana and PPP supporters to be patient. “It is going to be a long night, and results are going to come in little dribbles from different parts of the country…it’s hard to form an opinion based on what you see on individual statements of poll.”
