Kaieteur News – A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) on Saturday held its final rally at the Square of the Revolution, drawing a large crowd as it made a final appeal to voters ahead of Monday’s election.
The rally, which began around 18:00hrs, attracted not only a massive physical turnout but also an impressive online audience. According to the party, approximately 45,000 people tuned in to watch the event virtually.
Supporters, including families and children clad in the party’s signature green colours, gathered to hear from key candidates.
Presidential candidate Aubrey Norton focused his address on the rising cost-of -living, outlining how an APNU-led government would work to alleviate the burden on citizens. He stressed that the gathering was more than a political event, declaring, “My friends, this is more than just a rally, this is a movement to take back our country, to rescue our country.”
Norton went on to emphasize APNU’s core mission, “Our aim is to restore decency in Guyana, to restore law and order, and to lift the people of Guyana out of poverty.” He further stated, “We want to build a society that truly serves its people and ensures that every Guyanese benefit from our nation’s oil wealth.”
Prime Ministerial candidate Juretha Fernandes focused her speech on improving the lives of those living in the hinterland regions. She promised better road access, quality education, regular old-age pension payments, and an overall improvement in living standards. “We are going to make sure that the resources of this country belong in your pockets,” Fernandes said. “Come Monday, the people of the hinterland will no longer suffer from high living costs. We will put an administration in place that moderates prices and ensures a better quality of life for all.”
Vice Presidential candidate Ganesh Mahipaul echoed the party’s policy promises, including a 34% increase in public servant salaries, raising the income tax threshold to $400,000, implementing a rent-to-home initiative, and providing free land for all citizens 18 years and older who fall below the income threshold. “Let us be clear tonight, on Monday the choice is yours,” Mahipaul stated. “The PPP has given us corruption, abuse, and exploitation. With your vote, you can change your life and send a message to the PPP/C that their days are numbered.”
Also addressing the rally was political activist Dr. David Hinds, urging voters to seize the moment. “We are marching to the promised land,” he said. “On September 1, we have a cheque to cash; a cheque first promised at Emancipation in 1838 and again at Independence in 1966. But when we tried to cash it, we were told there were insufficient funds. Now, when Aubrey Norton and his team push open the gates of government, that cheque shall finally be cashed.”
Rounding out the evening was new APNU candidate and attorney Ronald Daniels, who praised Norton’s leadership and urged voters to trust the APNU team. “You have Aubrey Norton, a leader and a man of the people,” he said. “I promise you, Guyana, there will be no other team that will work harder for you.”
