Kaieteur News – Dem boys hear something that mek dem almost choke pon dem morning bush tea. One man, who suppose to be contesting de upcoming elections, boldly seh that Guyana using first-past-the-post. Yes, y’all hear right—first-past-the-post, like we is some lil village council vote where de man wid de most bicycle supporters win!
But leh me remind he and all dem who eyeing up Parliament seat: Guyana don’t run no first-past-the-post system. We running proportional representation. In other words, it ain’t who run fastest to de finish line, but how many passengers yuh carrying pon de bus. Yuh could win a whole constituency in first-past-the-post, but in Guyana system, yuh vote does get stir up, divide up, and count like rice in de pot—every grain matter.
So imagine de horror when a man who want sit down in de National Assembly can’t even tell de difference. How yuh gon’ pass laws, but can’t pass a basic test pon de electoral system? Dem boys seh is like applying to be pilot and telling people yuh gon’ drive de plane like a minibus.
Dem political parties need to start doing entrance exam fuh dem candidates. Basic stuff: “What system Guyana using? A) First-past-the-post, B) Proportional representation, C) Duck racing, D) All of de above.” If yuh fail that, pack up yuh nomination paper and carry it home.
Because if dem candidates confuse de system now, imagine wah gon’ happen inside Parliament. Instead of debating budget, dem gon’ deh arguing if majority mean one man win or if it mean everybody get lil piece.
Dem boys seh, politics is serious business, but yuh can’t help but laugh when yuh realize some of dem who want rule de country don’t even understand how de game does play. If we don’t get it right, we gon’ end up wid Parliament full of people who think first-past-the-post is a horse race.
And Guyana can’t afford dat kinda joke.
Talk half. Leff half.
