Heat, beat and the public toilet
Dem Boys Seh…
(Kaieteur News) – Dem boys seh de heat is on—and not de kind of heat you get when Parliament start kicking up a storm. This is real heat. Guyana baking like somebody put de whole country in a pressure cooker and forget to turn down de stove.
Temperatures reaching 34 degrees Celsius and higher, and every expert advising: “Drink plenty fluids. Stay hydrated.” Good advice. Excellent advice. But dem boys got one small question: Where you going when all that water decide it wants to come back out?
Because if you have to go into Georgetown, you could drink enough water to float a small canoe. But eventually nature is going to send you a text message: “Urgent. No postponement.”
And then the problem begins. Where are the public conveniences?
Dem boys know plenty places where you can buy a cellphone, a beer, a hamburger, a gold chain and even a car tyre. But try finding a public toilet in Georgetown.
So, the government telling people to drink more water to beat the heat. But if you have to pass water, you have to heat a beat.
That remind dem boys of one day when dem boys had to go badly. Dem boys finally found a public toilet with two stalls. One door was locked, but the other was available. Dem boys rushed inside, closed the door and began attending to business.
Suddenly, from the locked stall next door came a voice:
“Hello there! How are you doing?”
Dem boys thought this was strange, but manners is manners.
“Not too bad, thanks.”
A little silence.
Then the voice came again:
“So, what are you up to?”
Dem boys, now wondering whether this was some new form of public-toilet social networking, replied: “Just here relieving myself. How about yourself?”
Then came the reply: “Sorry, I’ll have to call you back. I’ve got some jerk in the stall next to me answering everything I say.”
Dem boys seh in this heat, hydration is important. But so is location, location, location. Because when nature calls in Georgetown, you don’t need a telephone. You need a toilet.
Talk half. Leff half.
