Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand, during consultation with stakeholders from the sports fraternity.

Minister Priya Manickchand with stakeholders during consultation for the North Ruimveldt Secondary Sports facility.
Kaieteur Sports – Plans for the construction of modern athletics track and other sports facilities at North Ruimveldt Secondary School have taken an important step forward, with key sports stakeholders praising Minister of Education Priya Manickchand for facilitating meaningful consultation and incorporating their concerns into the project’s design.
The consultation, held under the leadership of Minister Manickchand, brought together a wide cross-section of the sporting community.
Present were Guyana Olympic Association President Godfrey Munroe, Head of the Unit of Allied Arts Nicholas Fraser, and representatives from the Athletics Association of Guyana, Guyana Football Federation, Guyana Basketball Federation, Guyana Defence Force, Guyana Police Force, and members of the sports journalism fraternity.
Teachers from North Ruimveldt Secondary were also part of the discussion.
Stakeholders described the engagement as both constructive and encouraging, noting that their input was not only heard but taken into consideration.
Minister Manickchand emphasized that sports remain a critical component of the Ministry of Education’s vision, particularly with facilities being directly tied to schools. She underscored the government’s commitment to ensuring the project meets both community and international standards, while lauding the associations for their active involvement.
One of the most notable outcomes of the consultation was the decision to expand the athletics track from 300 metres, as initially announced by President Dr. Irfaan Ali, to a 400-metre synthetic surface.
This adjustment now positions the facility to host international-standard competitions, a development warmly welcomed by the athletics fraternity.
In addition, the Guyana Basketball Federation’s proposal for 3×3 basketball courts was embraced and incorporated into the design.
This is expected to complement the wider vision for the complex, which will also feature courts for basketball, volleyball, and tennis, in keeping with President Ali’s earlier announcement.
The facility is earmarked to serve as a major recreational hub for residents of North Ruimveldt and its neighbouring communities, while directly benefiting the estimated 4,000 students attending schools across North, East, and South Ruimveldt, as well as Tucville.
According to Dr. Ali, the complex will mirror the quality of the Leonora Synthetic Track and Stadium on the West Coast Demerara, ensuring access to world-class infrastructure in Georgetown.
Built on an unused lot near the North Ruimveldt Secondary School, the complex is expected to transform sports development in the capital city.
By welcoming dialogue and adapting the facility’s design, the Ministry of Education has earned commendation from the sporting community, who view the North Ruimveldt project as a timely and significant investment in Guyana’s future athletes.
