Amanza pours cold water on PPP/C’s anti-corruption plan

Kaieteur News – Presidential Candidate for the Forward Guyana Movement (FGM) Amanza Walton-Desir has criticised the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) over its newly announced anti-corruption policy.
During a Facebook Live session on Monday evening, Walton-Desir questioned the sincerity of the PPP’s promise to establish an Anti-Corruption Unit, calling it a mockery and saying, “They are pranking us.”
The People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) on Monday launched its 2025 elections manifesto, which includes a commitment to establish an Anti-Corruption Unit and to fully enforce the Access to Information Act.
In the manifesto, the PPP/C stated, “Over the next five years, the PPP/C government will continue to ensure that the public procurement system is fair, transparent, competitive, efficient, and promotes value for money.
In our ongoing efforts to combat corruption, we will: strengthen laws where needed; establish an anti-corruption unit; use technology such as blockchain to aid transparency, reduce bureaucracy, and improve efficiency; and fully enforce the Access to Information Act.”
However, Walton-Desir specifically referenced the PPP’s anti-corruption initiative, stating that the party “is playing in our faces” and “they are pranking us,” given that it had previously banned the use of the word “corruption” in the National Assembly.
“I want you all to understand that the PPP/C government is promising the people of Guyana to establish an Anti-Corruption Unit. You understand that the PPP is playing in our faces, right? You understand that Irfaan, Mark, Jagdeo , the whole side of them , are simply playing in our faces,” she stated.
Drawing on her experience as a former parliamentarian under the APNU, Walton-Desir highlighted the irony that the PPP government, which had previously banned the use of the word “corruption” in the National Assembly, is now centering its campaign around tackling it. “This is the same government that, for the past year in Parliament, we could not say the word ‘corruption,’ but now they are promising to establish an anti-corruption unit. Y’all, please make it make sense. They are pranking us,” she said.
She went further to question how such a policy would be discussed in Parliament, asking rhetorically, “What does this mean? Are we now allowed to say the word ‘corruption’ in Parliament? How are we going to refer to this in the National Assembly? How is this word going to be spoken, how are we going to describe this unit? The ‘Anti-C Unit’?”
Walton-Desir also pointed out the PPP/C’s decision to dismantle the State Assets Recovery Agency (SARA) after coming into office in 2020, and terminated the services of the Director, Professor Clive Thomas, and his deputy, Aubrey Heath-Retemyer (Major ret’d), with immediate effect, citing a breach of the State Assets Recovery Act of 2017.
“They disassembled SARA that was authorized to go after anyone who enjoyed the proceed of corruption and rob the people of Guyana of their patrimony because of corruption. And they are going to tell us that they are going to set up an anti- corruption unit,” she said.
Walton also claimed that such a unit will be fought against the said part enforcing it stating, “the irony of that is that they would have to go against themselves. Its going to be Jagdeo against Jagdeo because that man is the most corrupt kind of this country,” she said.
In addition to her criticism of the proposed anti-corruption unit, Walton-Desir also took aim at the PPP’s pledge to enforce the Access to Information Act. “What is preventing them from enforcing the Freedom of Information Act now? You are in government, are you not the government?” she asked.
She referenced the ongoing six months of protests demanding greater access to public information, pointing to the refusal of Commissioner of Information, Charles Ramson Sr., to respond to requests from civil society and members of the media. “How many Fridays has Christopher Ram been standing outside the Commissioner of Information’s office, protesting because Charles Ramson Sr. is not doing his work?” she asked.
Last week Thursday, Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo stated that improvements in access to information would be made if the PPP/C is re-elected in the upcoming September 1 General and Regional Elections, implying that no such access will be granted before the elections.
As such, Walton-Desir pledged that under an FGM government, new accountability measures would be introduced, including what she called the “Theft of Underservice Legislation.” She explained, “If you go to work saying you are the Commissioner of Information and you are not doing the work, that is theft from the Guyanese people, and that is why you all will be jailed.” She concluded by accusing the PPP of using campaign promises as a smokescreen. “Irfaan is writing his manifesto like he’s in opposition wanting to get into government. Everything in their manifesto, they could have done it in the last five years.”
