Dear Editor,
In attendance at a meeting of GECOM officials with party agents, the issue of dead persons being listed was raised. The example of someone who died 13 years ago and whose death was registered with the GRO was provided.
GECOM’S Deputy Chief Elections Officer responded by asking the person who raised the matter whether the opportunity was used to have that name deleted in the Claims and Objections exercise. He then referred the matter to the Commission.
The Commission had discussed this matter ad nauseam. The Commission by a majority vote refused to use the legal provision for the reports from Commissioner of Police and the Chief Medical Officer on deaths to be used for deletions, yet when faced with such a question the Officer who participated in the refusal refers the matter back to a body that has refused to take the legally enshrined action. This is but one example of GECOM’S stoic refusal to take actions to ensure that every measure is taken to ensure that the conditions for a free and fair election are met, yet GECOM marches on to prepare for and guarantees the conduct of a free and fair election.
Vincent Alexander
GECOM Commissioner
