NA educator hails Forward Guyana Movement as best alternative
Educator and Forward Guyana Movement candidate, Antacia Thomas
Kaieteur News – Forward Guyana Movement (FGM) was unwrapped and presented to the Guyanese electorate back in June, and at its helm is former APNU+AFC Opposition Member of Parliament, Amanza Walton-Desir. The party is one of the few newly crafted political factions defining Guyana’s political landscape for the last few months, all of which are vying for the seat of government at the upcoming polls.
As it seeks to broaden its base and carry forward its message, FGM has since released its manifesto, as well as its list of candidates. One of its New Amsterdam-based candidates, Antacia Thomas, holds an anchored conviction that the newly founded party is the ideal option away from the traditional heavyweights: the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) and the People’s National Congress/Reform (PNC/R)-led APNU.
Ever since attaining independence, Guyana has been molded by policies and practices of the PPP/C and the PNC separately for decades. No other political entity outside of the two has wielded power by itself, but had in many instances combined with either of the two larger parties in a bid to acquire power to pursue various national objectives.
Thomas, a fairly young and charismatic teacher of the New Amsterdam Secondary School, features on the FGM list of candidates to contest the elections. Backing her party leader as the best choice for Guyana, the 29-year-old educator noted that her enthusiasm for the two major political forces has long since depleted.
“I’ve seen the work of the PPP, and I’ve also seen the work of the PNC. And honestly, after decades of recycled promises and broken systems, I believe Guyana is ready for real change- true change. That is what the FGM represents: not just a shift in leadership, but a transformation in governance.”
She summed up FGM under Walton-Desir as a party with substance. Having worked with the attorney during her stint with APNU, Thomas envisioned that a government under FGM led by the politican will “come with solutions built from real concerns, guided by what actually needs to change.”
Thomas’ desire for change is spurred by her perspectives being aligned with FGM and what Walton-Desir upholds. She summarily dismantled the incumbent administration’s “polished talk, pomp, flair,” but from which nothing of substance materialises. Shortcomings cited by the FGM candidate included the promised 50 per cent salary increase yet to be given, the failure to adjust the ExxonMobil contract, and most notably, the controversy revolving around the death of 11-year-old Adriana Younge.
“I believe that true governance, the kind that Guyana desperately needs, will come through the Forward Guyana Movement. The vision is not about ego or pettiness, or the same old recycled political power plays. It is about the people and about a better, brighter future,” the teacher emphasised.
