Presidential Candidate for WIN, Azruddin Mohamed addressed a large gathering during a public meeting in Sophia last night
Kaieteur News – Leader of the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) Azruddin Mohamed on Monday evening laid out his plans for a better Guyana, which include a hike in salary for public servants, increase in old age pension and an aggressive fight against corruption in government.
Mohamed made the promises while addressing a large crowd at a public meeting in Sophia, Greater Georgetown. Mohamed also revealed that if elected to office his government build free houses for the vulnerable and invest heavily in citizens.
Speaking directly to the enthusiastic crowd, Mohamed said: “Coming in here I counted hundreds of shacks in Sophia, hundreds of shacks, its heart-wrenching to see how people can live like this in this country and they (government) claim they care. They claim they are for the people; they are One Guyana; I don’t think so. They care for their families, friends and favourites that is what they care for. Under my administration I will ensure that I build houses free for the vulnerable people in this country.”
Mohamed who is known for his charitable works before entering politics said he has built more homes for the vulnerable than the government has done. Mohamed told residents that hundreds of millions are being allocated for the government’s Men on Mission initiative and yet they do not see the full benefits of these sums. He added that visiting different communities, he observed that 48% of this population is living in shacks, in inhumane and deplorable conditions, without water and electricity. “We will ensure that we put a stop to this,” he said noting that his party plans to address the backlog of applications for house lots.
He noted that having been in Sophia, he observed the condition of the ballfield there noting that it is in dire need of an upgrade. To this end, the Presidential candidate said his administration plans to improve the conditions of not only in Sophia but all recreational grounds. Noting that the country has so much talent when it comes to sports, Mohamed said a WIN administration will invest in youth and athletes in ensuring they have what is need for their development.
During his address Mohamed also spoke about the plight of some contractors and what they have to do to get a contract in the country. He made it clear that under his administration, no bribery or corruption will be tolerated and that contractors would have to build to standard. “But the contractors have to get it right too, because I won’t tolerate substandard work, I won’t tolerate that. Once they tender, they would get their contracts, once everything is okay, they would get their contracts but they have to build to standard.”
Addressing the issue of corruption, Mohamed said “Corruption is like a mosquito, it sucks the blood of the common man…” he said this year government passed a budget of $1.3 trillion 25-35% of which goes into the pockets of the government ministers. “This is true, this is the reality, we all know this. We’re gonna take that money and invest in the people.” He added that under his administration “if a minister of my government lapses, they gotta go, they got to go.” Among other promises, Mohamed reiterated some of the plans documented in their party’s manifesto which include: raising the school cash grants, increase old-age pension, raise public servants’ salary and also those persons of the private sector.
Speaking at the meeting also was a candidate from Region One, Deon La Cruz who noted some of the struggles his Amerindian brothers and sisters are faced with. According to La Cruz he was once a supporter of the PPP/C government, but he has not seen the government living up to its promises to uplift his people. As such he said he has decided to join the WIN party. He noted that he would usually join Mohamed and his team to a lot of Amerindian villages and has seen firsthand the good works the businessman does in communities.
“Too long our people be on poverty, if you travel the North-West region, you will see people living in tule houses, people using kokerite leaf just to shelter their children, paddling in boats to go to schools. Our people have been neglected by the PPP/C government, and that is why we stood up and have to fight against this government,” La Cruz expressed.
The party candidate continued, “You know what is the eye-pass from this government, what they are giving our people in Region One, they giving them one black tank. Disrespect our first people of this country, you living in an oil-rich country and giving us one black tank.”
Joining Mohamed and La Cruz in Sophia were other candidates: Odessa Primus and Tabitha Sarabo-Halley who noted that they WIN party is committed to creating a better life for all Guyanese.
