Kaieteur News – The completion of the new Demerara River Bridge might yet again be delayed and Vice President (VP) Bharrat Jagdeo says there is no need to rush the bridge’s completion to meet an artificial deadline.
Jagdeo at this weekly press conference held on Thursday was asked whether the government had plans to fast tract the bridge’s completion ahead of the August 31, 2025 deadline.
The vice president dismissed concerns raised by citizens about the load testing of the bridge as “nonsense” noting that the supervisory and construction firms are both experienced.
“They’re not going to be pushed to do anything that’s unsafe. So, I don’t know when they would actually complete it. It would be very soon. They’re now hooking up the final span across. It would be very soon,” he said.
The VP explained that if citizens drive across the old bridge, they will be able to see the progress so far, but government will not “push them to meet an artificial deadline just for the sake of the elections.”
“The people in Region Three and Region Four who use that bridge, and every other region see it every day. They know what the commitment we made to get a structure up like that in such a short period of time,” he said.
Jagdeo boastingly declared that the bridge nearing completion as well as all the associated highways being completed in a three-year span are phenomenal.
“It’s four lanes now, so you don’t have to worry about the bridge congestion even …I don’t know if they would allow overtaking on the bridge because I don’t know about these things, but it’s two four lanes now, and so it would be easy flow of traffic. It would be free,” Jagdeo added.
In January, the Ministry of Public Works announced that the deadline for the completion of the new Demerara River Bridge has been shifted from March 2025 to August 31, 2025.
This was revealed by Head of the ministry’s Works Services Group (WSG), Ron Rahaman who was at the time addressing members of the media at the ministry’s end-of-year press conference held at the Pegasus Suites.
Providing a status update on the new river crossing that will link Regions Three and Four, Rahaman said “the completion date is set for August 31st, 2025” disclosing that the construction progress is currently at 61.72%.
