Kaieteur News – An 18-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday in connection with the tragic death of 16-year-old Reyna DePeazer, who was fatally struck by a stray bullet on Monday night on Mango Lane, East Ruimveldt, Georgetown.
The suspect has been identified as Travel Danies Hammer, of Trench Road, East La Penitence. According to a police statement issued on Thursday, the incident occurred around 23:20 hrs. while DePeazer and a friend were sitting on a motorcycle, liming near another parked motorcycle. Hammer reportedly arrived at the scene in a white Fielder Wagon (registration number PYY 2896).
“He then exited the car with a handgun in his hand, went up to the motorcyclist (next to the victim and her friend), and the two of them had a misunderstanding,” police said.”
In the heat of the argument, Hammer drew his gun and fired, with one of the bullets striking DePeazer in the neck and causing her to collapse. Hammer went into the car and fled the scene. “The victim was picked up by Police ranks and escorted to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where she underwent surgery and later succumbed,” police said. She died while receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit.
Around 01:00 hrs. the following day, Hammer was arrested by police on Mandela Avenue in the same vehicle used during the incident. He was arrested, cautioned, and taken into custody. A search of both the suspect and the car was conducted, but no firearm was found. “He was escorted to CID Headquarters, where he was swabbed for gun powder residue, and the motorcar was lodged. He was placed into custody as investigations continue,” police said.
Police have not yet released a photo of the suspect. Reports indicate that DePeazer had been attending a birthday celebration at the East Ruimveldt Learning Centre when the shooting occurred. A video circulating on Facebook shows the teenager lying unconscious in a pool of blood, while bystanders attempted to assist her. One man is heard asking for phone credit, and others worked frantically to stop the bleeding. Reyna DePeazer died the following day, leaving family, friends, and the community in mourning.
