District 7 Bartica dethrones District 10 Upper Demerara/Kwakwani to cop title

Kaieteur Sports – Three points decided this year’s ExxonMobil National Inter District Kayaking champions when District 7 Bartica with 67 points, edged the defending two-time champions District 10 Upper Demerara/ Kwakwani on 64 points, last Sunday on the water top of the Demerara River, near the Watooka Guest Club in Linden.

In brilliant sunshine District 7, who amassed 67 points to cop first position, took the lead from the first race, winning the Open Female Long Distance event and would later add another victory when they won the Under 16 Female race.

They also claimed second place in the Under 14 Mixed, Under 16 Male Short distance, Under 16 Mixed and Open Male races while gaining a 3rd, 4th and 5th places in the other races of the day.

Their closest rivals were last year’s winners District 10, who in falling short by three points, scored 64 points, as they won two races Aldo in the Male Long distance and the Male Open to go with three 2nd places and one 3rd, two 4ths and one 5th place.

District 2 came in third position with 58 points gained from three wins which were in the Under 14 Mixed, Under 16 Mixed and Open Female events.

They scored a 2nd place in the Male Ming distance and 3rd in the Under 16 Female race.

They also scored points for being 5th in the Female Long distance, Under 16 Make Short distance and 7th in the Male Open.

They were followed by District 4 East Coast Demerara on 50 points, District 1 North West with 49 points, District 8 Potaro/ Siparuni getting 22 points, District 3 West Demerara with 20 points, and in the cellar spot District 5 West Coast Berbice, a mere one point.

The win for the new champions District 7 earned them $600,000 the winner’s trophy, Gold Medals and bragging rights for one year.

The beaten champions, District 10, walked away with $400,000 and the runner up trophy and Silver Medals, while third place finishers District 2 received $250,000 a trophy and Bronze Medals.

The annual competition is in its fourth year and organized by the Elite Kayaking and Nature Tours headed by Dr. Deon Anderson, and once again the title sponsors for this year were ExxonMobil.
