Kaieteur News – If you’ve ever found yourself cheating on your diet for something irresistibly indulgent, then Dane Kennedy’s desserts might be to blame. His business, cheekily named ‘Sweet Man,’ is winning hearts and palates with delicious treats designed to make you surrender to your cravings without regret.
Kennedy, 35, has been baking for over a decade, but his love for food started long before he became a certified pastry chef. Growing up in a home where his mother regularly baked, Kennedy developed an early appreciation for sweets and the comfort they bring. “Baking helps me to be regulated with everything going on around the world,” he says.
Though initially pursuing computer science at the University of Guyana, it was a part-time job as a kitchen assistant at Night Cap that rerouted his career. “I was halfway through my [studies],” he recalls.
What started as a side hustle quickly became a passion. Kennedy dropped out, enrolled at the Carnegie School of Home Economics, and later spent a year refining his craft at the PomMarine Culinary School in Barbados, becoming a certified pastry chef.
Upon returning to Guyana, Kennedy worked at the Italian Grill and then spent six years at Bistro Café & Bar. But he wanted more. A year ago, he launched his own dessert business under the bold name Sweet Man—a nod to the Guyanese term for someone who might tempt you into sweet “trouble.” He explains, “It’s something you know you shouldn’t indulge in, but you simply can’t resist. That’s why our slogan is, ‘Whenever you need that extra sugar!’”
The response has been organically sweet. Without paid promotions, Sweet Man grew from under 100 to over 700 loyal followers in just a year. At the heart of the brand is Kennedy’s mission: to deliver desserts so satisfying that customers feel nothing but joy after indulging.
Among the most talked-about items on the menu is the Guinness Cheesecake, a delicious fusion that reflects Kennedy’s knack for innovation. He experiments constantly, blending traditional desserts with new twists, like cheesecake tacos or pies. Most recipes are his own, but he also draws inspiration from cooking shows and online videos.
Customer feedback plays a major role in shaping his menu. One memorable moment came during a pop-up event last Christmas. A woman skeptical about the hype returned within 30 minutes for more, and later called to reserve five slices. “She’s been a loyal customer ever since,” Kennedy says.
Despite the ups and downs of running a business, Kennedy sees ‘Sweet Man’ as just the beginning. “We would like to open our first location and be more accessible. From there we’d like to have several locations and become a household name,” he said.
With passion, originality, and a whole lot of flavour, ‘Sweet Man’ is quickly becoming more than a dessert brand; it’s an experience, one delicious bite at a time.
