Guyana U21 Women’s Hockey team departs for Trinidad to engage in pre-PanAM training

Kaieteur Sports – The Guyana Under-21 Women’s Hockey Team departed local shores yesterday for Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, where they will play a series of training matches against the Trinidad and Tobago National Women’s Team.

The Guyana Hockey Board (GHB), in a recent press release, confirmed that this training tour forms a crucial part of the team’s final preparations for the upcoming Junior Pan American Games, scheduled for August in Asuncion, Paraguay.

With limited access to proper training facilities in Guyana, particularly the absence of an artificial turf field, and recent disruptions caused by inclement weather, the team’s match readiness had become a growing concern. This training series is therefore a critical opportunity for the players to sharpen their skills, build team cohesion, and gain valuable competitive experience ahead of the Games.

Guyana booked its spot at the Junior Pan Am Games after an impressive third-place finish at the qualification tournament in Barbados this March. The squad remains largely unchanged from that campaign, with only one adjustment: Hannah Percival replaces Georgianna Fernandes, who sustained an injury during the qualifiers.

The GHB has expressed sincere gratitude to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) for their continued support, which has made the team’s participation possible. Additionally, the Board extended appreciation to the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, along with several corporate partners whose contributions aided the team’s qualification efforts: Sabor Restaurant, C&V Caribbean Shipping Ltd., King Ocean Services, Kestrel Guyana Inc., ACADO Inc. under the Moo! brand, and John Fernandes Limited.

Commending the players and coaching staff for their dedication and resilience, the GHB said it looks forward to the team’s continued growth and strong representation of Guyana on the international stage.
