Presidential Candidate for APNU, Aubrey Norton and his team has met with representatives of the Carter Center.
Kaieteur News – Presidential Candidate for APNU, Aubrey Norton and members of his team on Thursday met with representatives of the Carter Center.
In attendance at the meeting were: APNU‘s Prime Ministerial Candidate, Ms. Juretha Fernandes, Mr. Ganesh Mahipaul, Mr. Roysdale Forde, S.C. Senior Counsel, Mr. Riaz Rupnarain and Ms. Nima Flue-Bess. The Carter Center team comprise of Senior Electoral Advisor Carlos Valenzuela, Political Advisor Nicholas Jahr, and Democracy Program Associate Director Brett Lacy.
The US-based election observer mission has also met with representatives of the Alliance For Change (AFC) party and the Azruddin Mohamed- led We Invest in Nationhood (WIN). In separate Facebook posts, representatives of the two political parties expressed optimism at meeting with the observers.
In their post last Thursday, the AFC noted the meeting was about strengthening democracy through dialogue. “On Thursday, July 10, members of the AFC, led by Party Leader and Presidential Candidate Nigel Hughes, met with the Carter Center to discuss their planned mission for the 2025 elections,” the party said in a post.
While Mark DeFrance of WIN merely posted a picture as proof that his party has met with the observers of Carter Center. In subsequent press statement, the party noted the meeting was where concerns were raised about victimization and matters related to the September 1, 2025, General and Regional elections.
Mohamed, a businessman, was joined by former Peoples National Congress Reform (PNCR) General Secretary Dawn Hastings-Williams, former parliamentarian Tabitha Sarabo-Halley, and Campaign Manager Odessa Primus.
Primus told Kaieteur News that the victimization of the party’s supporters was high on the list of things discussed. “In terms of what has been happening here locally towards our party and our party supporters and the victimization that they have been met out with. From losing your job right down to being attacked on social media either directly by the government or indirectly by their propaganda outfits… who have been going out their way to attack and to destroy the character and self -esteem of many of our people.” she explained.
Last month, the Carter Center announced that they had launched an international election observation mission to Guyana in advance of the country’s General and Regional Elections scheduled for September 1.
