Kaieteur News – A 23-year-old woman on Wednesday was remanded to prison in connection with the murder of her mother-in-law.
Remanded was Deborah Williams, a housewife of Mabaruma Settlement, North West District, Region one.
Dead is 47-year-old Sharlim Anthony.
The incident reportedly occurred on Saturday, at the Kissing Rocks Access Road in the Mabaruma Settlement. Williams was subsequently arrested and charged with the offence of murder.
She appeared at the Mabaruma Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Judy Latchman on Wednesday. The offence was read to her and was not required to enter a plea to the indictable charge. Williams was remanded to prison and is scheduled to return to court on August 5, 2025.
According to police reports, Williams and her husband, Raj Anthony were imbibing at their residence, when an argument broke out. The woman allegedly hit her husband on the forehead with a piece of wood, rendering him unconscious.
Anthony’s parents who lived a short distance away heard the commotion and his father came to the residence to inquire what was going on.
“Upon arrival at the suspect’s home, Sharlim Anthony immediately approached her daughter-in-law and asked her, ‘What did you do to my son?’,” police said.
Instead of providing a verbal response, Williams reportedly dealt her mother-in-law several stabs to her right arm and upper back with a broken beer bottle.
Both Anthony and her son Raj Anthony were taken to the Mabaruma Regional Hospital, North West District by public-spirited citizens. Sharlim succumbed to her injuries at about 21:30hrs while receiving treatment.
