Dear Editor,
There was a time, not so long ago, when supporters of the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPPC) spoke passionately about political victimization. They lamented being silenced, targeted, and economically punished for supporting the “wrong” party. They cried out against what they described as an oppressive climate of fear, where dissenting voices were shut down and supporters were hunted, not for crimes, but for their beliefs. Today, the irony is deafening.
In recent months, we have witnessed an aggressive and coordinated attempt by some PPPC supporters—often hiding behind fake profiles and anonymous pages—to harass, discredit, and threaten those who dare to show support for Azruddin Mohamed or other non-establishment voices. What started as political disagreement has devolved into online bullying, name-calling, character assassination, and most dangerously, real-world consequences. Contracts are withheld. Jobs are lost. Government-linked clients disappear overnight. People are being made to feel that supporting someone other than the ruling party is an act of treason.
Let’s be clear: this is not democracy. This is intimidation. And it should worry every Guyanese—regardless of political affiliation. Democracy does not begin and end with the casting of a ballot. It lives in the everyday right of citizens to associate, express, and engage freely without fear of reprisal. When people are too afraid to “like” a post, attend a meeting, or speak their mind because they might lose their livelihood, then democracy is not alive—it is in retreat.
Even more concerning is the culture of silence that surrounds this behaviour. Few within the leadership of the PPPC have spoken out against it. Some even encourage it. The very tactics once used to marginalize and destroy the voices of dissent are now being deployed against a new generation of thinkers, entrepreneurs, and community leaders—many of whom only wish to contribute to national development in their own way. Among them is Azruddin Mohamed, a businessman whose rise has been met not just with scrutiny (which is healthy) but with vilification and venom that reeks of political fear-mongering. Let’s not forget the fake rape allegations, state sponsored lobby group to go after him, false linking to Maduro, etc.
This is not a call to endorse any one individual or party. It is a call to fairness, consistency, and principle. If we condemned political harassment under the PNC, then we must condemn it now. If we believed that economic opportunity should never be tied to political loyalty, then we must defend that standard now. If we ever believed in a Guyana where people were free to support who they wished without losing their dignity or their job, then the time to speak up is now.
Let us not become what we once despised. Let us not betray the ideals of democracy for the comfort of power or party politics. If the PPPC wishes to be seen as a beacon of modern governance, it must have the moral courage to rein in its supporters and create a political culture that respects pluralism, not punishes it. True strength lies in tolerance. True democracy welcomes difference. And true patriotism is not found in silencing others—but in defending their right to be heard, even when we disagree.
Sincerely,
Singh

(Kaieteur News) – For years, we have called May 5, “Arrival Day.” It is a name that sounds inclusive but, in reality, obscures more than it reveals.
