We want a transparent Protection Treaty
Dear Editor,
I was happy to read that your columnist, Peeping Tom (KN of 2026-08-31) recognises the dangers of renting another country’s power. The headline and my training led me to think it was about energy, but it is much bigger. Indeed, I have long recognised the reality that might is right in our world, no matter what verbal spin is attached. Over a year ago, I wrote that Guyana needed a proper Treaty with the USA, (https://kaieteurnewsonline.com/2025/03/27/call-for-a-treaty-with-transparent-costs/).
The USA created our present destabilisation dilemma before Independence in the 1960s by encouraging Venezuela to resurrect a speculative claim on Essequibo, which had been settled by international arbitration in 1899. The propaganda did not stop and now successive Venezuelan governments feel they have to win elections from an electorate indoctrinated in this false belief. The greedy world power, the USA, is seeing this as an opportunity to keep successive Guyana governments in check so that their oil companies can continue the unfair exploitation. A most recent manifestation of the infestation is the arrant nonsense of the Minister of Natural Resources that silence protects Guyana’s interests, which you dealt with in a good editorial.
Let me recount some good reasons for a transparent Treaty with another Nation, especially a world power in this age of the United Nations and human rights. It would quantify the protection in terms of economic benefits over time, acknowledging the present needs and status of the parties, with provision for changes in circumstances. Transparency via registration with the UN should ensure that the terms and changes are not ‘lost’. It could reduce war and conquest to commerce and minimise secret deals between negotiators that enrich them disproportionate to the national benefit. Even the Venezuelans can benefit. What are they getting for that 65 billion barrels of oil tribute to the USA? This is something Her Excellency Caroline Rodrigues-Birkett could work at should she become UN Secretary-General.
