Dear Editor
Brief space for a suggestion based on a worrisome pertinent question is our upcoming elections. After Nomination Day, then what? Will the current rag-tag bunch of ‘wana-bii’ Guyana Presidents agree to present their case to the electorate—answer some questions about what they believe qualifies them for the job—exactly why we should choose any among them to represent our nation in a fraught future?
Seems axiomatic to me that this-your Kaieteur Newspaper as well as all others responsible for the dissemination of information, should—in collaboration with the Guyana Press Association—facilitate such an exposition with invitations issued to all parties contesting Guyana’s 2025 elections. If they decline the invitation, their reasons should be openly interrogated for the benefit of potential voters as well as documentation for the historic record.
Finally, while congratulating Iva Wharton on her assumption of the Presidency of the Guyana Press Association, I am simultaneously remembering my former colleague at the Guyana Graphic, the recently departed Rickey Singh. Rickey was an exemplar of committed investigative journalism in Guyana. He supported the Cheddi Jagan PPP regime—was so dedicated in his opposition to Forbes Burnham—that he was soundly slapped by an irate Desmond Hoyte… President Burnham’s Finance Minister at the time. I trust that Rickey Singh’s spirit will inspire Iva Wharton’s fearless leadership of Guyana’s Press Corps.
Sincerely
Joan Cambridge-Mayfield
