APNU, AFC secure place in front Umana Yana ahead of Nomination Day
APNU and AFC members outside of Umana Yana ahead of Nomination Day
Kaieteur News – Though Nomination Day for the 2025 General and Regional Elections is set for July 14, A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) and the Alliance for Change (AFC) have already secured their spots in front of the Umana Yana, located in Kingston, Georgetown.
Next Monday, the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) will host Nomination Day, during which all political parties wishing to contest the September 1 elections are required to submit their respective lists of candidates.
APNU was the first to set up camp. When Kaieteur News visited the Umana Yana on Tuesday night, Ganesh Mahipaul, surrounded by his colleagues, was seen playing a game of dominoes.
Mahipaul, who has been named APNU’s vice presidential candidate, told Kaieteur News that the party decided to begin camping out early because it is “ready”.
“We are here to show our strength that we are ready. We have already selected all our candidates for the regional list, the geographic list and the national top-up list, and all our list, they have their accompanying signatures and because we are ready, we are wasting no time,” Mahipaul said.
Underscoring the party’s readiness, he added that if GECOM were to bring Nomination Day forward, APNU would still be prepared. He explained that due to a lack of washroom facilities, groups will rotate their presence at the site until Monday.
Joining APNU on Tuesday evening was the AFC. Nigel Hughes, AFC’s Leader, in a Facebook live video said, “…the Alliance for Change at 6 o’clock this evening established its presence, it is the second political party to establish its presence here outside of the Umana Yana…”
He noted that AFC members will be at the site every day until Nomination Day, when they will submit their list of candidates.
