Kaieteur News – Dem boys seh Guyana officially now in de rainy season. Not like we ever come out of it fuh long. But now de rain falling like it vex with everybody. Back in de days, when bicycle was king and de whole city used to ride like Tour de France, once rain fall, everybody find demself under some shop canopy.
Back then, Rain used to mek strangers talk—man under de canopy discussing politics, sports, and who mek baby with who. It used to be a kind of community shelter, free of charge, sponsored by de shopman and storeman canopy.
But nowadays? Try dat same thing and see wah gon happen. De only ting yuh gon find on de pavement is plantain chips, fake Nike slippers, and one lady selling cellphone case while frying eggball at de same time.
De pavements done gone. Vendors tek over like is dem own inheritance. Yuh walking and dodging table legs, tent poles, and two-three big plastic barrel full of coconut water. If rain ketch yuh now, yuh either got to swim or pray fuh divine canopy from above.
Dem boys seh de modern Guyanese got two choices—get wet or buy a tent and walk wid it. Long time you coulda say, “Boss man, leh me shelter lil bit.” Now de vendor watching you like yuh interfering with de profits. “Buy or move!” is de new motto of de pavement republic.
One man seh he try to shelter under one stall and end up wid a $500 bill fuh a lime and two pepper. Rain ain’t cheap no more.
So dem boys seh prepare yuhself. Rain deh, but shelter scarce. Either walk wid a big umbrella or bring yuh raincoat and yuh patience. And if yuh really get desperate, just ask de vendor if you could tek shelter if yuh buy one lil coconut water. Maybe de canopy come wid customer service.
Rain fallin, but shelterin’ gettin harder than finding wuk in de government.
Talk half. Leff half
