Guyana gat gambling everywhere. Lotto, bookies, betting shops, casino, online betting and every conceivable way fuh convince yuh dat today is de day yuh go get rich without actually doing any work. And when dem official places done close, de unofficial economy tek over. Chick-chick board, road corners, dog fight betting, fowl-cock fight betting, dray cart race betting and under-bottom-house betting does continue until somebody win three hundred dollars and lose thirty thousand.

De strange thing is that everybody complaining about de high cost-of-living. Food expensive. Rent expensive. Electricity expensive. Transportation expensive. But some people still finding money every morning fuh gamble. Guvament talking about increasing disposable income to help people cope with rising prices. But dem boys suspect some people treating “disposable income” literally. As soon as de money become disposable, dem dispose of it — straight into de betting shop.

At this rate, gambling might soon become one of Guyana’s fastest-growing professions. Forget about qualifications, experience and references. Just bring luck, money and a willingness to lose both.

The national motto might soon change from “One People, One Nation, One Destiny” to “One More Bet, One More Chance.”
