Kaieteur News – Two miners were charged on Tuesday with the murder of a man at Balamani Backdam, Cuyuni River, Region Seven.
They were identified as 21-year-old Rovel Santiago of Mabaruma, Region One, and 20-year-old Shawn Williams of Kuru Kururu Village, Soesdyke Linden Highway.
The duo appeared at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Teriq Mohamed. Both men were not required to plead to the indictable charge and remanded to prison until August 14, 2025.
Williams and Santiago were arrested on Saturday for questioning in relation to the murder of another miner identified as Riley Abrams.
According to a police release, they had admitted their involvement in Abrams’ killing. They reportedly even led detectives to the crime scene where significant evidence was recovered, including knives (Suspected murder weapons) and the victim’s blood-stained clothing.
Initial reports were that Abrams was stabbed to death between 00:30 and 02:00hrs. on Saturday near a mining camp.
A post-mortem examination conducted on the remains on Monday, however, revealed that he died from multiple incise wounds.
