Kaieteur News – Ulric Fingall, a security officer who was remanded to prison last month for possession of narcotics, was on Monday released on $750,000 bail for the same offence.
The 31-year-old Fingall of Lot 134 South Better Hope, East Coast Demerara (ECD), was initially denied bail when he appeared before Senior Magistrate Fabayo Azore on May 19, 2025 at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Fingall pleaded not guilty to the charge which alleged that on May 16, 2025 at Space Gym’s parking lot Mandela Avenue, Georgetown, he had 3.810 kilogrammes (kg) of cannabis in his possession. He was initially represented by attorney Dexter Smartt.
During yesterday’s court proceeding, Fingall appeared before Magistrate Azore via zoom and was represented by attorney Bernard Da silva who successfully secured bail.
Fingall was granted bail on condition that he lodges his passport and report to Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) headquarters every last Friday of every month beginning on July 27, 2025.
The matter was adjourned for October 14, 2025.
It was reported that the prosecution had objected to bail. They indicated to the court that on the day in question, CANU officers were acting on information when they visited Space Gym and found Fingall carrying a brown cardboard box in the parking lot.
Fingall, when approached by a CANU officer, dropped the box. The officer identified himself and told the accused that he was acting on information that he was in possession of narcotics.
The officer searched the box and a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis was found in eight transparent plastic bags. The defendant was told of the offence committed, cautioned and arrested.
He was taken to the CANU headquarters with the narcotics which was tested, weighed, labelled, sealed and lodged.
Fingall was represented by attorney Smartt who told the court that on the evening of May 16, his client was hired to escort someone who had to transact business. The court was told the person was carrying large sums of money and required security.
Smartt said that his client was instructed to make a payment and collect a package. He complied and as he was returning to the vehicle, he was intercepted by CANU. Smartt told the court that the vehicle Fingall’s client was traveling in, left him at the location.
The attorney said that at the time of the bust, the box was closed and was opened by the CANU officer who discovered the narcotics. Fingall said he was unaware of the contents of the box.
