Kaieteur News – The new Christ Church Secondary School building, located on the corners of Camp and Middle Streets, Georgetown, is now officially opened after the original structure was gutted by fire two years ago.
Education Minister, Priya Manickchand joined teachers and other education officials on Monday to welcome back scores of students to their newly reconstructed school building.
Minister Manickchand said “We are at Christ Church Secondary and this is the first time the children are coming in and it’s really exciting. We are really looking forward to putting the children in here but getting results, because my belief is that while infrastructure matters a lot in far as access goes, if you don’t have school, you cannot do anything else. It is really what we do in the school in terms of how we teach, how we attend to each and every student, how we look at who has strength and how to make those better, how we look at those who have weaknesses and to reinforce those,” the minister exclaimed during a live Facebook broadcast.
Now back at its original location, students no longer have to travel the long distance to Turkeyen.

Christ Church Secondary is one of the new secondary school buildings that the education ministry will open for the new September academic school term.
The original building was destroyed by fire in January 2023, and students were relocated to the Cyril Potter College of Education (CPCE), Turkeyen. Investigation by the Guyana fire Service (GFS) found that the fire was an act of arson.
In June that year, the education ministry signed seven contracts totalling $688.1 million to rebuild the school. The contracts included Lot -1 Construction of Sub-Structure – BM Property Investment Inc. ($303,595,000.00); Lot -2 Super-Structure – Zeco Group of Services Inc. ($295,137,706.00); Lot -3 Installation of Electrical Infrastructure & Fixtures – N. Balgobin & Sons Contracting Service & Electrical Supplies ($41,938,500.00); Lot -4 Installation of Plumbing Infrastructure and Fixtures – BM Property Investment Inc. ($17,600,000.00); Lot -5 Installation of Air Conditioning Infrastructure and Units – A. Ograsein & Sons General Contracting ($10,745,000.00); Lot -6 Installation of Fire Prevention Units – A. Ograsein & Sons General Contracting ($6,759,000.00); and Lot -7 Masonry and Finishing Work – Pantheon Construction Inc. ($12,385,800.00).
The school will have 20 classrooms to accommodate 450 to 520 students and is furnished with science, TVET, electrical and woodworking, Information Technology and Home Economics laboratories, as well as art and music rooms.
The school also has fire prevention and retardant mechanisms and components. Some of these include, but are not limited to, fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, and some materials that will be used that are not highly flammable.
