Kaieteur News – In a heartwarming display of resilience, and academic achievement, Region Six is proudly celebrating its top performers at the 2025 National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA), with inspiring stories emerging from across the region, including a young, burnt survivor and two students from the New Amsterdam Special Needs School.
Among the stories that captured the region’s heart is that of Dwain Deputran, a boy from Morgantown, Berbice River, whose journey to success has been nothing short of extraordinary.
Deputran survived a devastating boat accident in 2021, which left him with third-degree burns to 40% of his body. Following the explosion of an engine that caused the injuries, Deputran was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he received critical care.
However, due to the severity of his condition, Saving Hands Emergency Aid (SHEA) a US-based medical charity urgently stepped in to coordinate his medical transfer to the United States for advanced treatment.
Deputran underwent multiple surgeries and received specialized care abroad before returning to Guyana. His medical condition coupled with other circumstances affected his ability to attend school. While his medical team advised that he may require future evaluations, his story is already one of triumph. Today, he is not just a survivor — he is a NGSA success story.
In another historic moment, two students from the New Amsterdam Special Needs School have achieved what was once thought unlikely. For the first time, the school presented candidates for the NGSA, and both exceeded expectations.
Lakram Khemraj scored an impressive 422 marks, securing a place at Berbice Educational Institute (BEI), while Afraz Hoosain earned placement at Vryman’s Erven Secondary School in New Amsterdam.
Their achievements represent a major milestone for inclusive education in Guyana and prove that with the right support and determination every child, regardless of their condition or illness, they can still shine.
Region Six also proudly celebrates its Top 10 NGSA performers, led by Adore Blossom Felicity Barnwell of Skeldon Primary School, who achieved an exceptional score of 486.06 marks and earned a coveted spot at Queens College.
Close behind were David Hariprashad of Cropper Primary with 485.18 marks, Vivek Winajajellum of Cumberland Primary with 485.09, and Prudence Caitlin Bhikhai of St. Therese’s Primary with 484.21 — all also gaining entry to Queen’s College.
Other outstanding achievers include Joel Mannu (484.1, Cumberland Primary), Julian Nicolas Mohabir (484.17, St. Aloysius Primary), Annya Ramsook (484.12, Rose Hall Estate Primary), and Nuvita Lackraj (483.39, New Market Primary), all of whom secured places at Queen’s College. Rounding out the top ten are Jasmin Rajnarine Persaud of Skeldon Primary with 482.37 marks and Luan Amandea Grace Medford of Port Mourant Primary with 482.33 marks, both gaining entry to The Bishops’ High.
The Regional Democratic Council (RDC) of Region Six, led by Chairman Mr. David Armogan, Vice Chairman Mr. Zamal Hussain, and Regional Executive Officer Mr. Narindra Persaud, extended heartfelt congratulations to all the high achievers.
“You have made your families, schools, and this entire region proud,” the RDC noted in a statement. “Your discipline, dedication, and hard work are an inspiration to us all.”
The RDC also acknowledged the commendable efforts of all students who sat the NGSA, including those who did not place in the top ten. “Success is not defined by the school you attend, but by the passion and persistence you bring to your journey,” the Council stated.
“We stand firmly behind every student and pledge our continued support as you transition into secondary school. We believe in your potential and look forward to the great things you will achieve.”
