Kaieteur News – General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C), Bharrat Jagdeo, has announced that the party will officially launch its 2025 General and Regional Elections campaign early next month.
The disclosure was made during a press conference held on Thursday at Freedom House, Robb Street. “We will launch our campaign in early July. You’ll hear more about that,” Jagdeo said. Irfaan Ali will lead the PPP’s List of Candidates at this year’s elections slated to be held on September 1. Political parties contesting the upcoming elections are required to submit their respective Lists of Candidates on Nomination Day, July 14, 2025.
The PPP General Secretary revealed that the party is currently vetting candidates for its official list an intensive process, given the level of interest within the PPP. “We are currently in the process of vetting candidates, and that is a major undertaking in a party where you often have for every list maybe 400, 500 people more who want to get on the list than you have space for,” he said.
Jagdeo added, “It’s a major undertaking, because, like everyone wants to be on the list, and you have to, you know, disappoint some people, and because you have limited space and so we are engaged in that process. We are trying to do it in a democratic way, consulting with the activists, the party activists and others supporters on the ground across all 10 regions, and we’re now going through the final stages of that process.”
Moreover, he took aim at other political parties, alleging that some are struggling to fill their lists and resorting to questionable tactics to secure candidates and backers. Jagdeo said the PPP is committed to following the regulations outlined by the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) particularly when it comes to collecting signatures of support.
“We are getting our list of backers using the GECOM-prescribed form, which has a declaration at the top that you are knowingly and willingly signing to support the list of candidates for a particular political party,” Jagdeo noted. Further, he said that in the past, some parties collected signatures on blank sheets of paper and later attached a covering letter, leaving many individuals unaware that they had backed a party they may not even support.
Meanwhile, only recently APNU Coalition condemned the PPP and its activists for allegedly intimidating and threatening persons who have affixed their signatures in support of the APNU list. “Persons are being told by PPP agents that they would be targeted and would lose their jobs. These acts of desperation by the PPP must be promptly denounced by all Guyanese. We must not allow these acts to escalate. The APNU Coalition is encouraged that Guyanese are resisting these efforts and are standing up for their rights. Come September 1st, let us use our votes to end this dark era of PPP rule,” the APNU said in a statement.
