Kaieteur News – Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand, on Monday committed to either rehabilitating or rebuilding the Mackenzie High School in Region 10 once the government is elected for a second term, after learning of its deteriorating state.
The commitment was made during her remarks at the sod-turning ceremony for the new $2.6 billion Christianburg/ Wismar Secondary School.
“I have been approached by the board members of Mackenzie High, and I am told that the school needs significant repairs or a rebuild. And once we have that look, you have a commitment from me at this podium that it will happen, that it will happen,” she assured.
Manickchand said that it is the government’s aim to ensure that there are no schools in disrepair while noting that 22 new secondary schools are being built in the hinterland.
“Our commitment to you is that in that second term, wherever we need to build or rehabilitate in Region 10, as everywhere else in the country, it will happen,” she added.
With the government’s investment in infrastructure, the minister noted that it is imperative that the schools produce good results.
“Linden particularly benefits from something, and that is 100% of your teachers, actually, 110 are trained in Linden. That’s nowhere else in the country; that’s in Linden. But we need to make sure that we see that in Region 10. We can’t be making these investments, which are heavy, and not seeing the results,” she pointed out.
Challenging not only the schools in Linden but across the country to improve on the areas they are falling behind on, the minister assured that bringing in better results means more opportunities for the students.
