Kaieteur News – Opposition leader, Aubrey Norton on Friday said his party has to do more work in order to secure the votes of youths under 25 years old.
Norton was asked to give a breakdown of his party’s internal polls on how the votes would be acquired across the board.
“Our latest poll results suggest to us that we need to do more work with the…It suggests that we are strong in the 35 and above. We are relatively strong in the 25 to 35. It is the 25 and under we have to focus on in the coming weeks,” the opposition leader explained.
He added that a large component of his team is comprised of youths.
Upon further probing by the media to ascertain his view on vote splitting among the smaller parties, and whether it would pose an issue for his party, Norton stated that his party will continue its hard work to secure a coalition for the upcoming elections.
Nevertheless, if such an arrangement with the Alliance for Change (AFC) does not happen, there are other options that could be activated to cushion this. He said the elections will be approached with a new strategy.
“Ideally, we prefer coalition, we believe it will make our job easier, but since we have been negotiating in good faith and we have been making sound proposals, at some point I will reveal the negotiations to the public, so that the public can understand we come a far way,” he said.
Norton told reporters that the AFC had demanded a 55/45 per cent partnership with them having the larger half but there were negotiations to make it a more level playing field. In spite of this, the PNC is making the necessary preparations if a coalition with the AFC does not occur.
“There is no doubt that things that happen would have psychosocial impact, the question becomes whether we as a political party have the capacity to deal with whatever psychological effect and we have been dealing with that internally,” he assured.
He stressed that the party has been staying focused, whilst dealing with the task ahead, reassuring its support base and doing its ground work which are all part of the efforts to beat the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) at the upcoming polls.
While many are anxiously awaiting nomination day, while the criteria have been finalised for the prime ministerial candidate of the PNC, Norton did not provide names of those who are being considered or seen as fitting to the said requirements. However, he did say that diversity will be an important component in the selection of the candidate.
