Dear Editor
This letter commemorates the life of Valerie Garrido-Lowe, who has recently passed away. Valerie was a mother, sister, and grandmother and served as a minister within the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples Affairs when the opposition was in power. In her role, she provided services and assistance to many people.
She was known for her interactions in the remote communities of the interior of Guyana, where she listened to the stories of residents and offered suggestions, as well as job and skill-based opportunities aimed at improving their lives. Her commitment to addressing the needs of the poor and vulnerable was significant, and she assisted a diverse range of Guyanese people, particularly Indigenous communities. Valerie was an advocate for Indigenous peoples’ rights and was unafraid to voice concerns when issues arose.
The minister navigated her political career with a focus on serving her people, in my opinion, similar to the approach taken by Mr. Stephen Campbell during his time as a parliamentarian. Valerie and Stephen are notable political figures from my home town Moruca, who represented the interests of Indigenous people from the heart. Sadly, she was the last stalwart representing the United Force (TUF).
Nevertheless, her contributions to the Alliance for Change party and the initiatives she championed are great efforts aimed at benefiting the nation. The legacy she leaves behind is expected to inspire future generations of Guyanese to engage in politics and advocate for the underserved in society, ensuring they can enjoy a dignified life from the country’s natural resources in an equitable and holistic development for all.
In summary, Valerie Garrido-Lowe’s service is remembered, and her contributions to society are recognised. May her soul rest in peace.
Yours truly
Medino Abraham,
Moruca man
