These old political games that they play
Dear Editor,
After a very publicised meeting and several days of waiting the WIN and APNU have issued a joint statement that leaves much to be desired. The embattled Mr. Norton who has overseen an exodus of talent from within his party after an unwillingness to accept the AFC in partnership continues to show that he may not be the man for the job. Amid controversy and previous calls for him to step aside Mr. Norton appears to prefer to play the waiting game once again. Although the PNC may lack a succession plan for its leadership the WIN party may not share this weakness. With one foot firmly placed in Guyana and another one that appears to be out of the door, the APNU may be calculating that it can regain its leadership with Azruddin losing his fight against extradition. However, Mr. Mohamed does have the benefit of a U.S. educated sister as his right-hand confidant who can continue WIN’s bid to lead the country.
Mr. Mohamed’s fight against corruption may be rooted in attempts to make amends for his past or a sincere desire to expose the government’s hypocrisy or both. Either way the people of Guyana will benefit from the pressure being placed on the government to clean up the corruption that is rampant. Mr. Ali on the other hand, whose grip on power and favourability within the electorate has slipped, has an opportunity to take decisive action to address the calls for change within his government. But his inability to act quickly may cost his party’s leadership at the polls. The holding of local government elections (LGE) will clearly show which parties have made gains and which ones are losing relevance within the electorate.
At the end of the day what matters is who our citizens believe they can trust to improve their lives for both the immediate future and the long term. CRG will support the party that is best for our country’s future and only time will tell as the next General Election approaches. In the interim, our nation’s people must be given a chance to have their voices heard. The LGE must take place this year. Otherwise, democracy will begin to lose momentum and the risk of a dictatorship taking hold will increase.
