…threatens to release evidence if President denies
Kaieteur News- Businessman Azruddin Mohamed, after posting his bail at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, told reporters that he has evidence to show that President Irfaan Ali facilitated the importation of his Lamborghini.
Mohamed, during an interview, told reporters that he holds proof of the President facilitating and assisting with the clearance of the Lamborghini. “Irrfan Ali is nothing more than a…person. I have proof where Irfaan Ali facilitated and assisted with the clearance of the Lamborghini. I’m waiting for him to say that that is a lie. And trust me, anytime he comes out and say it’s a lie, I’ll show the whole country how…he is,” Mohamed said.
Still on the Lamborghini, Mohamed said: “I called Jagdeo, I said I want to meet with you. He said, come now to the convention centre, that is in August/ September. I told him I want to purchase a Lamborghini. And he said, go to Irfaan Ali and to talk Irfaan Ali. That is what he told me,” the businessman told reporters.
Jagdeo, during his weekly press conference on Thursday, challenged Mohamed to release the evidence: “Let him release the evidence that President Ali told him to submit a false invoice to the GRA… (It is) a fake invoice, because no such thing happened.”
President Ali, in a comment to News Room, denied the claims made by Mohamed. “The authority to waive taxes rests with the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) and its Commissioner General. At no time have I instructed the GRA on any tax matter regarding Mr. Mohamed,” News Room quoted the President as saying. “I would definitely like Mr. Mohamed to share any information in which he presented to me the true invoice of the vehicle which is now available to GRA. It is ridiculous for Mr. Mohamed to suggest otherwise.”
According to News Room, Ali said that while tax matters are frequently brought to the attention of the presidency, they are appropriately referred to the GRA, which operates independently in such matters. “Any matter in relation to taxes – and many such matters are raised with the president – are sent to the GRA. In this instance, the GRA made it very clear to Mr. Mohamed that they were investigating the true value of the vehicle and in the course of that investigation, the true value of the vehicle is now established,” he added.
When Mohamed was asked to comment on whether he and his father, Nazar Mohamed, evaded the taxes for gold, he denied the allegations. He said, “If someone smuggled 10,000 kilograms of gold out of Guyana, 10,000 kilograms of gold, right? You think it’s easy to smuggle all this gold out of this country. Someone, senior Government officials have to know about these things…” In an earlier interview with reporters, Nazar also denied the allegation. He mentioned that the family’s lawyers are working to get the United States government to lift the sanctions imposed on them.
