Dear Editor
The Indian Government sent a parliamentary team to Guyana to seek Guyana out to pick sides in the India/Pakistan conflict that is rooted in unresolved issues going back to the 1947 division.
Several publications carried various stories of the visit: Indian Parliamentary Visit (Guyana Chronicle, May 28), President Meets Indian Delegation (SN May 28), India seeks Guyana’s support on UNSC amid ‘terror threats’ (Guyana Chronicle, May 27). The delegation came to Guyana because above all, India is seeking Guyana’s support against Pakistan at the United Nations Security Council.
What was left out of the Delegation’s one-sided narratives is Pakistan’s accusations of India’s ongoing support and sponsoring of terrorism in its Balochistan territory. Islamabad also alleges that India is working with the Taliban of Afghanistan to undermine its interest. India has also ceased sharing water with Pakistan. This will eventually lead to famine in Pakistan.
This black and white position of blaming Pakistan for all terrorism in Kashmir and elsewhere ignores the Kashmiris’ will to self-determination, the unconstitutional destruction of Kashmir Autonomous Status and the indigenous resistance and uprising in Jammu and Kashmir which was an independent Kingdom before 1947.
Guyana should remain neutral and not support ultra-nationalist movements in this dispute. All forms of terror where innocent people are killed must be condemned also. Yet Guyana must also examine all angels of the historical conflict. Meanwhile, Guyana needs global support against Venezuelan aggression, and India is deeply dependent on Venezuelan oil.
India and Pakistan should seek a political solution to the Kashmir conflict. Both countries have nuclear weapons, and a Nuclear War can easily erupt between these two countries that could claim millions of lives.
Regards
Ray Chickrie
