Man gets 2-year sentence for obtaining money by false pretense
Kaieteur News- A 54-year-old man was sentenced on Friday to two years’ imprisonment for obtaining money by false pretense.
The accused, Ronald Saunders of Good Hope, East Coast Demerara, appeared before Magistrate Annette Singh at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

Saunders pleaded guilty to the charge, which alleged that between August 15 and 18, 2023 at Kitty Georgetown, he obtained $700,000 from Andrew Hall by pretending that he could acquire a government contract for Hall, when he was not in a position to do so.
According to the prosecution, the defendant told the victim that he is a member of the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C), and he can obtain two government contracts for him however, a $700,000 tender fee would be required.
Hall made the payment and when he attempted to call Saunders, his calls went unanswered. A police report was made and Saunders was later arrested.
Magistrate Singh asked Ronald if he wished to say why she should not give him the highest penalty of five years’ imprisonment. He pleaded with the magistrate to be lenient with him, since he acknowledged that what he did was wrong.
