Kaieteur News- A 23-year-old farmer was fatally stabbed on Tuesday night after defending his partially blind 20-year-old brother, during a confrontation with a man at Bamboo Creek Village, Region Eight.
Dead is Ricky Edwin, who resided at Bamboo Creek Village. The suspect, who is known to the deceased, has been identified as 24-year-old Dennivaldo Lewis, called “Delson,” a miner of Bamboo Creek Village.
Police reported that the incident occurred between 18:00h and 19:00h. Moments before the incident, Edwin and his younger brother, Nathan Edwin, were reportedly drinking alcohol at the road side, when Lewis, who was intoxicated, joined them.
“About 17:30 hrs, the suspect began to insult Nathan, who is blind from his right eye and wore a sun glasses (dark shade). The suspect subsequently took off Nathan’s sun glass and broke it,” police said in the report.
Upon witnessing this, the older Edwin intervened and pushed Lewis, who then began to curse both brothers, and left in the direction of his residence, about half a mile away.
Thereafter, the brothers proceeded to the younger Edwin’s home, where they continued drinking and stood in the unfenced yard. During that time, Lewis reportedly returned, walked up to the brothers, and continued to curse them.
Police added, “They then had an exchange of words, and suddenly the suspect drew a small knife about four inches in length from his right-side pants pocket, walked up to the now deceased, and fired three stabs at him.”
As a result, the victim sustained stab wounds to the middle of his chest, left abdomen and left buttocks area. The younger brother, scared for his life after witnessing the stabbing, ran for safety.
Despite being stabbed, Edwin ran off in a western direction of the yard, where he subsequently fell to the ground face down and became motionless.
“The suspect ran out of the yard and made good his escape in an unknown direction,” police stated.
The deceased’s mother, 46-year-old Bridget Edwin, later raised an alarm and reported the matter to the police.
When the police arrived, the victim’s body was seen lying face down clad in a blue pants and black vest drenched in red substances which appeared to be blood. The body was examined by Dr. Mosope Okelana of the Village Health Center, who pronounced him dead.
Police photographed the body and surrounding area before securing it in the village, where it remains under watch as they await transport to Kato Village, for a post-mortem examination.
Police said checks were made for the suspect at his home and in the village, but he was not seen.
