Kaieteur News- Retired Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) investigator Leonard McCoshen arrived in Guyana on Monday evening and has already begun working on the investigation into the death of 11-year-old Adriana Younge.

On Tuesday, Crime Chief and Deputy Commissioner of Police Wendell Blanhum confirmed McCoshen’s arrival.

“I can confirm that the Canadian former RCMP police detective has arrived in Guyana and has already commenced work,” he told Kaieteur News.

Adriana’s lifeless body was discovered by her father, Subrian Younge, in the swimming pool of the Double Day International Hotel in Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo, on April 24—approximately 20 hours after she was reported missing during a family trip.

In a statement issued last Thursday, the Ministry of Home Affairs described McCoshen as “a trained and qualified homicide and suspicious death investigator.”

The ministry said that he “has over 30 years of experience as an investigator with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. He had spent 20 of those years attached to the Serious Crimes Branch (SCB) in the Major Crimes Unit (MCU), with the mandate to investigate serious, complex and sensitive matters, mainly homicides and deaths where foul play was suspected.”

According to the Ministry, McCoshen has “supervised and coordinated more than 200 investigations, including homicides, kidnappings, and other serious cases,” and brings a “wealth of training, qualifications, and experience” to the current probe.

Adriana’s family has repeatedly called for international intervention in the investigation into her death, specifically requesting assistance from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Scotland Yard, or the RCMP.

As a result, the appointment of McCoshen has been met with dissatisfaction by the family.

According to the family’s attorney, Dr. Dexter Todd, the decision to appoint McCoshen without involving the FBI or other internationally recognized agencies previously requested is inadequate. He stated the family considered the move by the government “unacceptable.”
