Kaieteur News- Veteran politician and former General Secretary of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR), Amna Ally was on Tuesday laid to rest at De Edward Village, West Coast Berbice (WCB).
Ally, who served as Minister of Social Protection under the A Partnership for National Unity + the Alliance for Change (APNU+AFC) government, died on Saturday at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) at the age of 69.
President Irfaan Ali at the Janazah (a Muslim funeral prayer) held at the Central Islamic Organisation of Guyana (CIOG) hailed Ally for her unwavering commitment to public service through her time as a teacher and a politician.

President Irfaan Ali with PNCR member Joseph Harmon and others at the viewing and Janaaza at the CIOG, Woolford Avenue, Georgetown.
“Her life was one of steady, committed service to her community, her students, her party and her country. She wore many hats over the course of her life: teacher, politician, parliamentarian, Governance Minister and she wore each with selfless service, but perhaps the hat that fit her most comfortably was that of a human being who never lost sight of humanity in others,” the Head of State said.
Ali said that beneath her firm tone and political armour was a woman who inherently understood that, “politics is not war, and that even when we disagree, sometimes profoundly; we do not have to be disagreeable.”
“Amna Ally knew the difference between opposing someone’s views and scorning their demand. She did not confuse ideological divergence with personal disdain. She could, with conviction, call out what she considered flawed arguments or poor policies, yet return moments later with a smile or a story that reminded everyone that politics is not all that we are,” the president said.
Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs Anil Nandlall, SC, Minister of Education Priya Manickchand, British High Commissioner to Guyana Jane Miller, members of the PNCR – including Amanza Walton – Desir, Dr. Karen Cummings, former leader of the party Robert Corbin and Joseph Harmon as well as Speaker of the National Assembly Manzoor Nadir were among those who attended the funeral.
Ally’s political career began in 1970 when she was only fifteen years old. She served under four leaders of the PNCR, Forbes Burnham, Desmond Hoyte, Robert Corbin and David Granger.
She also served as National Secretary of the Young Socialist Movement and was appointed General Secretary of the PNC during David Granger’s tenure. Ally entered Parliament in 1985 where she represented the Mahaica- Berbice Region.
Ally was a graduate of both the Cyril Potter College of Education and the University of Guyana.
