Kaieteur News- The government had launched a campaign to remove derelict vehicles and encumbrances along the roadways. The ministry has been urging the public to comply with the standards of cleanliness in the environment.
Vice President, Bharrat Jagdeo, said the government may be forced to remove and scrap derelict vehicles parked along the roadways if owners fail to do so.
Jagdeo said the government has been receiving countless complaints from residents of communities along the East Coast of Demerara.
“So, these are going to be removed. Now for those people who have been keeping their old vehicles on the side of the road, or, and they still want them, remove them, because if you’re not going to remove them and you still want those vehicles, we’re going to come and take them away and dump them,” he warned.
Jagdeo said residents are at their wits’ end over individuals who have been dumping pieces of old iron, conducting their businesses, and leaving derelict vehicles along the roadside.
“I already spoke last week of the issue of people parking on roadsides, and how we intend to address that through these commercial parks that are currently being built, where people would have to pay to park, well that will come on stream shortly,” he said.
The issues with derelict vehicles being left on the roadway and their removal has been ongoing for some time. The Ministry of Public Works reported last late year that some $24 million was spent on the removal of derelict vehicles along roadways.
“The Ministry of Public Works has mounted 47 exercises between January to September 2024, to remove derelicts from various parts of Regions 3 and 4. These activities have amounted to a cost of GYD $24,511,000,” the ministry disclosed.

Govt. MUST remove ALL current VEHICLES OR DERELICS parked
on the sides of roadways, sell those salvageable and deposit the proceeds
in the Govt. Main account…. for development of the country.
If citizens want to purchase cars, other types vehicles, they must show
proof, there is a garage, bottom house, driveway to park their vehicles.
Otherwise, they cannot be sold any. There must be a law for this.
Japan, I understand, has such restrictions in place.
