Kaieteur News- Long time ago, de only setta people who used to get lost in a department store was dem lil children who run away from dem parents to go by de toy section. Nowadays, is everybody—blind, half-blind and even some who got 20/20 vision but can’t read a sign. But back then, when you walk in Guyana Stores or Bettencourts, everybody know where dem going—even de blind man.
Dem boys remember de story of one blind man who walk in de store, stop in de middle, and start to poke around with his cane. When de store clerk run and ask, “Bossman, you need help?” de man seh, “Nah, I just looking around.” Is den dem boys realise, blind people got sense of humour too!
But times change. De roads nah got dem markers no more. Some done cover up with asphalt, some bruk up, and some de government seh dem got to “modernize”—but all dem do is modernize confusion.
Dem boys seh yuh got to learn how fuh help people who can’t see without mekking dem feel like dem helpless. Back then, you coulda stretch yuh hand and seh, “Lemme help yuh cross de road,” and de blind person woulda hold yuh like Moses holding de rod. Now? Yuh try grab dem arm, and before yuh blink, yuh getting a lash with de walking stick.
Is nah that dem don’t want help. Is just that dem want respectful help. De kind where you seh, “Would you like some assistance?” not, “Come leh me drag yuh like a market bag!”
Dem boys seh, de blind got pride. Dey does hear everything, feel everything, and some of dem even read more than y’all who can see. So treat dem like human beings, not like charity cases.
Yuh want fuh help? Use yuh mouth before yuh use yuh hand.
And remember, sometimes de blind seeing more clear than dem who walking around with two good eyes and no clue!
Talk half. Leff half!
