(Kaieteur News) – Dem boys seh back in de day, when yuh see somebody sitting in de VIP section, yuh didn’t need ask who he was. De answer was obvious: somebody important. Maybe a Minister, a President, a judge, a foreign diplomat or some other member of high officialdom.
Even big businessmen didn’t automatically get through de VIP gate. Money could buy yuh a ticket, but it couldn’t always buy yuh prestige.
Today? Dem boys watching de VIP section and wondering whether dem at a state function or a daycare centre. Yuh have more children in de place than cricketers.
VIP no longer seem to mean Very Important Person. It mean Very Important People—and sometimes Very Important Family.
One VIP walking through de gate and suddenly an entire delegation behind him. Wife come. Daughter come. Mother come. Uncle come. Aunty come. Cousin come. In-law come. Out-law nearly come too. And all of dem get tickets. Before yuh know it, de VIP section looking like a family reunion.
Dem boys seh if yuh invite one VIP to an event these days, he asking if he could bring he entire family…plus he dog.
And de funniest thing is that sometimes yuh look at de VIP enclosure and wonder: Who exactly is de VIP?
Because de person who supposed to be important could be sitting quietly in de middle while everybody around he behaving like they own de stadium. De VIP himself might be there because of office, but half de section seem to qualify by bloodline.
Dem boys seh de VIP system now operating like Guyana inheritance law: once one family member qualify, everybody sharing de benefit.
Soon event organisers gon have to stop printing “VIP” on de invitation and start printing: VIP + Immediate Family + Extended Family + Persons Who Claim They Are Family + Anybody Who Came With VIP.
Back in de day, VIP was an honour. Today, VIP looking more like a family package deal.
Dem boys seh at this rate, next time yuh see a VIP section, don’t ask who de Very Important Person is. Ask: “Which family does own this side?”
Talk half. Leff half.
