Kaieteur News- The Ministry of Health announced on Friday that seven doctors from the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) will undergo a six-month Health Personnel Training Programme in China.
According to a release from the ministry, the training is being done through collaboration with the Ministry of Health and the Jiangsu Commission of Health, People’s Republic of China.
It was reported that the six-month programme will see Guyanese doctors undergoing three months of theoretical training locally, followed by three months of practical, hands-on sessions in China.

Minister of Health, Dr. Frank Anthony, and GPHC’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Mr. Robbie Rambarran, alongside officials of the Health Ministry, the GPHC and Jiangsu Commission of Health.
“The initiative is part of a bilateral effort to enhance the quality of healthcare delivery in Guyana,” the ministry shared.
Speaking at the official launch of the programme, which was held at the Hospital’s Research Centre, Minister of Health, Dr. Frank Anthony, described the training as “high level” and essential for building capacity within the local health system.
The minister said, “We are very pleased with this programme because we’ve already seen positive outcomes from the first batch of participants. The training in China is not only technically advanced, but also takes place in a modern, technology-driven environment that focuses on improving patient care.”
He added that, upon their return, the medical professionals are expected to become leaders in their respective fields and help raise the standard of care in their departments.
Present at the launch was GPHC’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Mr. Robbie Rambarran, who welcomed the initiative, noting it is significant for the nation’s health sector.
“Today marks another important milestone for our hospital and our country. We remain committed to excellence in care, education, and research. Continuous training is crucial for improving health outcomes, and this programme will empower our professionals with cutting-edge skills and a global outlook,” he said.
It was further noted by the ministry that the partnership signals ongoing efforts by the Government to expand medical expertise and strengthen healthcare infrastructure through international cooperation.
This newspaper had reported that Minister Anthony, at the launch of the Universal Healthcare Voucher in March, said that Guyana has been partnering with a number of countries and international organizations to strengthen the country’s healthcare system. He noted that this is part of President Irfaan Ali’s vision of building a world-class healthcare system for all citizens.
“So these partnerships are going to help us to grow and when the President talks about developing a world-class healthcare system we recognize that if we are going to move this system forward, if we are going to develop it to that level, then we are going to need partners that have demonstrated excellence in healthcare across the world, and we have been seeking out the best partners to make sure that we can bring them in and work so that we can develop our skills,” he said at the time.
