“Time to play my role in making GTU great again”
─ GTU regional vice chair hopeful
Kaieteur News- “The time has come for me to play my role in making the Guyana Teacher’s Union (GTU) great again.” Those are the words of Sir Randy Mingo, who has thrown his hat in the race for chairman of the Buxton branch of the Guyana Teacher’s Union (GTU).
October, 2025, will mark 27 years since King joined the teaching profession in Guyana. As the current head of the department of industrial technology at the Bladen Hall Multilateral School, Sir Mingo has amassed a lot of experience in leading his department.
Speaking to Kaieteur News recently, Mingo said he has now chosen to run for the position of regional vice president. “I have always displayed leadership qualities and held many leadership positions wherever I find myself, that includes church, school, social groups, and even in my community. I have noticed and paid keen attention to GTU and the leaders who were and are before me.”

He said he has always seen himself in the union serving in a number of positions. He believes that it is time he takes his rightful place providing service to his colleagues. Known for championing the cause of teachers across Guyana, Sir Mingo believes that they deserve much more than what is currently being offered. He said he himself has experienced the hardships they face daily, bending over backwards to make a ‘dollar out of 50 cents.’
He told this publication that stronger leadership is needed by leaders who will serve the union with decency, honesty, and integrity.
“I have those qualities and believe the time is right for me to lead from upfront and not behind the scenes. I am currently the newly elected chairman of the Buxton GTU branch and am now vying for the position of RVP Demerara. Where I will get to serve on a larger scale. My immediate plans are to make Buxton Branch stronger than it is now,” he said.
He noted that the aim is to unite teachers under one platform, ensuring they are valued, appreciated and compensated adequately for their service to the nation’s future generation.
Speaking on his time so far as a teacher, Mingo said, “My journey in this noble profession has so far been a rewarding one, since I had the opportunity to mould the minds of many children who came under the span of my control. I taught at several schools and for a brief period in my earlier years was seconded at the Department of Education RDC Region 4. I was fortunate to meet many interesting colleagues in this noble profession, and also parents of my learners. I love this noble profession since I believe that it’s one of my many callings. I plan to continue giving of my best to serve my students and by extension my country as well, until my time of retirement.”
Meanwhile, Sir Mingo said he believes incoming president, Coretta McDonald will be a strong leader, who like himself, has the best interest of teachers at heart. “I know for a fact that she will do a great job as president and outside of her own qualities, she will be supported by a great team with me as RVP Demerara, that will heighten her performance and the qualities she brings to the GTU. She has served GTU under different governments with distinction and have only shown biasness for her teachers. So yes, I believe her tenure will be a great one.”
