Dear Editor,
The recent decision by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) restraining Venezuela from conducting elections in Guyana’s sovereign territory is yet another positive development. It will be recalled that a similar order was issued earlier by the Court when Venezuela attempted to ‘annex’ the Essequibo region by way of a fake referendum.
These rulings by the world’s highest Court are testimony to the impartiality of the Court in the dispensation of justice and the rule of international law.
Venezuela has both a moral and legal obligation to adhere to the ruling of the ICJ, failing which it could be further sanctioned by the international community. The consequences for violating the decision of the ICJ could be fraught with all manner of dangers for Maduro and his regime, which is already being ostracized by the international community following allegations of rigged elections and authoritarian rule.
The People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) administration must be commended for dealing with the border issue in a mature and peaceful manner and within the framework of international law.
