…says countrywide protests; a call for justice for Adriana
Kaieteur News- Opposition leader, Aubrey Norton said while his party does not support looting and the destruction of property, it does support the struggle for justice for the death of Adriana Younge.
In a video released Monday evening, Norton said the protests that erupted after the discovery of Younge’s remains last Thursday, are a direct result of the Guyana Police Force’s (GPF) misinformation to family members and the country. He said the protests are a call for justice for a ‘young woman that was abducted and brutally murdered.’
“We support the Guyanese people in the struggle for justice for Adriana Younge. We note it is a multi-ethnic protest movement and the government is uncomfortable with that, that the government is doing everything to suggest that it is a political protest.”
He continued “let it be made very clear, we do not support the looting, we do not support the destruction of property. We are fully in support of the struggle for justice, and we will continue to do that.”
He said the PPP has been blaming the opposition for the unrests so as to “throw the matter under a rock.” He believes the protests must continue to ensure justice for Adriana.
“We noted that the PPP, over the years, has been recruiting people who are in conflict with the law. We note that they are using ten-day workers and criminal elements to penetrate protests so that they can create mayhem and blame it on the APNU/PNCR.”
He said the PPP has an old tactic of putting criminal elements into protest activities to blame the opposition. Norton maintained that the opposition is not involved in such activities. “We support the protest for justice, we support the family of Adriana Younge. We are concerned that the PPP’s sole interest seems to be in creating ethnic conflict and mayhem, so that they can get support.”
A huge fiery protest erupted last Thursday morning at the Double Day hotel, Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo, after Younge’s body was pulled from the hotel’s pool. Family members had staked out the hotel from Wednesday, when the 11-year-old was discovered missing. The family had insisted that the child was still in the hotel, although police claimed that surveillance footage showed that she left the hotel in a car. Following the discovery of the body, police issued a statement admitting that it had release an inaccurate missive.
Since last Thursday, demonstrations have been held in communities across the country calling for justice and the resignation of law enforcement officials, who protesters believe mishandled reports and investigations into Younge’s disappearance. The largest to date, was the countrywide riots that erupted Monday evening following the autopsy report which showed that Younge’s death was caused by drowning.
