Kaieteur News– Two United States-based pathologists are scheduled to arrive in Guyana today, following the request by the family of 11-year-old Adrianna Younge to have independent pathologists conduct her autopsy. The child’s lifeless body was found floating at the Double Day International Hotel’s pool at Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo on Thursday.
Younge’s body was discovered about 20 hours after she went missing at the said location despite several checks of the pool and surroundings of the hotel.
The independent pathologists, identified as Dr. Gary Collins, Chief Medical Examiner of Delaware, United States of America and Dr. Glenn Rudner of Mount Sinai Hospital will be present during the child’s autopsy.
Dr. Collins was appointed Delaware’s Chief Medical Examiner in September 2014 and according to the Delaware Government’s website worked extensively in the field of forensic science.
He has performed thousands of autopsies certifying the manner and cause of death in more than 4,000 cases. Dr. Collins also has experience in a variety of forensic, medical, and public health-related cases.
He is a graduate of the University of West Indies, where he completed his pathology residency at the University of South Florida and his forensic pathology residency at the Drexel University College of Medicine. He is also board certified in anatomic and clinical pathology and forensic pathology.
Meanwhile, according to Mount Sinai Hospital, Dr. Rudner’s specialty is in Anatomic Pathology and Clinical Pathology and he studied at Wayne State University School of Medicine, Duke University Medical Center, Tulane Medical Center, Fellowship, Pathology, Forensic Pathology, Office of Graduate Medical Education and Armed Forces Institute of Pathology.
The circumstances surrounding the child’s death are mysterious and unclear, prompting her relatives to request an independent investigation into her death and for an independent pathologist to perform the post-mortem examination.
The family’s attorney, Darren Wade, in a brief interview earlier Saturday, told Kaieteur News that he is unsure whether Dr. Collins will perform the autopsy.
“I don’t know the methodology…I can’t speak on that,” Wade said.
Late Saturday night, Minister of Health Dr. Frank Anthony confirmed that a third ‘highly qualified’ pathologist will be in Guyana for the autopsy. “Yes, there is a pathologist… a highly qualified pathologist from Mount Sinai, that will be joining the team,” he told Kaieteur News.
The first pathologist to arrive in Guyana is Dr. Shubhakar Karra Paul, who operates out of Barbados. He has been assigned to perform the autopsy, but it is unclear whether he will or one of the other two pathologists will, since the relatives of the child expressed concerns. On Saturday morning, President Irfaan Ali told relatives that their request for an independent pathologist to perform the autopsy is being reviewed.
Further, Guyana’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Narine Singh, in a press release on Saturday, said statements uttered by the family’s attorney, Darren Wade, are inaccurate and misleading.
The CMO highlighted the seriousness of the matter and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to full transparency in the ongoing investigation into the death of Younge.
The statement said, “While Guyana possesses local pathology expertise, the appointment of Dr. Paul underscores the administration’s intent to ensure impartiality and public confidence in the integrity of the investigative process.”
The CMO said that Dr. Paul, who is an international forensic pathologist and will conduct the PME, is a highly experienced forensic pathologist with over 23 years in the field. He currently serves as Consultant Forensic Pathologist at the Forensic Sciences Centre under the Office of the Attorney General in Barbados, a position he has held since 2021.
Dr. Paul holds medical and forensic qualifications, including an MBBS, MD, and DNB, and is a Member of the Faculty of Forensic & Legal Medicine of the Royal College of Physicians in the UK. He is registered with the Barbados Medical Council and is also certified to practice in Guyana.
