Kaieteur News- Education Minister, Priya Manickchand said Wednesday, that the new secondary schools being built countrywide will include Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) facilities for students.
During her remarks at the opening ceremony of the National STEAM Fair 2025, the minister said the government is creating access to secondary schools and will change the quality of education being offered.
“So right in Bartica, you’re going to have a Practical Instruction Center. Right at the high schools that we’re currently building, there are rooms and facilities that are going to allow for CVQs (Caribbean Vocational Qualification) that allow children to get a level one Caribbean Vocational Qualification Certificate. So, if you’re not the child who wants the academic certificate from CXC, we have choices again from CXC, but we’re providing it,” she explained.
According to the minister “access to education, a higher quality of education, a more varied education, is what we’re setting about to achieve right here.”
Regarding TVET in Guyana, the ministry earlier this month, launched for the first time, a national Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Policy geared at equipping individuals with the necessary skills and knowledge needed for employment opportunities.
The policy was developed through collaboration between the Guyana Government and the World Bank. The policy will span a 10-year period (2025-2035).
At that launch, Deputy Chief Education Officer responsible for Technical and Vocational Education, Dr. Ritesh Tularam noted that with sectors like construction, manufacturing, public administration and services growing rapidly, the government understands that it is important to invest in technical and vocational skill development at all levels to prepare a competent competitive labour force with the requisite skills, knowledge and competencies to meet the ever changing and future skills needs of Guyanese rapidly emerging locally as well as the Caribbean regions.
