Kaieteur News- A 34-year-old gold miner was fined $60,000 on Thursday after he was caught driving an uninsured and uncertified car. He appeared at the Vigilance Magistrates’ Court.
Akeem August of Lot 35 Middle Walk, Buxton, East Coast Demerara (ECD) appeared before Senior Magistrate Sunil Scarce, who read the charge which alleged that on November 1, 2024, at Melanie Public Road, ECD, he drove a motorcar without it being insured and certified.
August pleaded guilty to both charges.
The prosecution stated that on the day in question, the defendant was driving motorcar PWW 1805 west along the southern driving lane of the Melanie Public Road when the fatal accident occurred.
August was asked to present his driver’s licence and other documents, which he initially refused to produce. He subsequently produced his insurance and vehicle fitness to the officer, which was renewed by the police on December 13 and 15. The defendant was then told of the offence committed and was arrested and charged.
The miner agreed with the facts presented by the prosecution and told the court that, due to his working in the interior, he was not aware that his documents had expired.
Magistrate Scarce fined August $20,000 for driving an uncertified car and $40,000 for driving an uninsured car.
He pleaded with the magistrate for time to pay the fine since he did not have sufficient money to pay the fine. Magistrate Scarce granted him seven days to pay the fine. Failure to pay the fine within the 7-day period will result in August being imprisoned for one week.
